Food for Thought Report 5.8 - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

If you're looking to savor a heavenly flavor, we've found it at the top of this week's Food for Thought.

"I'm proud to be a top performer," said Maria Rojas. 

Step inside the kitchen of Heaven's Drive-In at 1103 East 50th Street and co-owner Maria Rojas says you'll see teamwork is their recipe for perfection, "One does grill, one does salad bar, one does the front and at the end of the day we move to the back and make sure everything is done."

The menu is filled with a variety of choices, but Rojas says her customers have their favorites, "The carne guisada, beef fajitas and our burgers. Everybody loves the Jumbo Burger." And that's not your ordinary jumbo burger - that's Angus beef made fresh when you order.

Now to this week's only low performer.

It's a Depot District hot spot that has previously been at the top of the Food for Thought report. But this time, inspectors cited Big E's BBQ at 1802 Buddy Holly Avenue for 11 critical violations.

• Pico de gallo was thrown away because it was above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
• Cooked chicken and sausage were also discarded. They were not at least 135 degrees.
• There was also no food thermometer.
• An employee was not wearing gloves when preparing food.
• An employee also wiped their forehead and then continued to work with food without washing their hands.
• There were no towels or soap at a hand sink.
• A hand sink was blocked by boxes.
• A hand sink was heavily soiled. An uncovered drink was on a prep table.
• Knives were on top of dirty cotton towels. And utensils were in a heavily soiled container.
• Other items were also dirty.
• The facility does not have a certified food manager.

Management was not available to comment, but according to the health departments re-inspection report - all critical violations have been taken care of.
