Levelland Child Fatally Injured While Playing with Gun

A 10-year-old Levelland boy is dead and authorities say his 1- year-old brother was holding the gun.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Monday, at a house just west of the Levelland Municipal Airport. The Sheriff's Department tells NewsChannel 11 that the boys found a .380 handgun in the bedroom of their 13-year-old brother.

The 11-year-old was holding the gun when it when off, hitting 10-year-old Chance Lightner in the side. EMS took Chance to Covenant Hospital in Levelland. From there he was rushed to a Lubbock hospital where he died.

The Hockley County Sheriff's Department calls this a tragic accident. They also tell us that there is an investigation into where the 13-year-old acquired the gun. NewsChannel 11 has learned that he allegedly took the gun from his grandparent's house in Lubbock without their knowledge, and had been hiding it for at least a month.
