Mavs Not Looking to Draft For Help

The Dallas Mavericks need help on defense, especially inside, where they also could use more rebounding. And if they had another reliable scorer, that sure would ease the burden on the team's top stars. But players like that aren't likely to be found with the 55th pick in the draft -- the Mavs' only choice on Wednesday.

So coach and GM Don Nelson is making alternate plans. He says he was thinking about going out and playing golf during the first round.

The fourth-to-last pick is all the Mavericks have after sending their first round choice to Denver in a February trade that brought in Raef LaFrentz and Nick Van Exel. Even if they had that pick, the 25th, Dallas might not be able to find anyone who could crack its rotation.

Dallas has won 110 games the last two seasons and is considered among the handful that could challenge the three time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
