LCU Lady Chaps Win Again

Raquel Hawkins produced five runs-batted-in, as her two-for-two performance at the plate led the No. 9 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals to a 9-0 win over the No. 8 Dickinson St. University Lady Blue Hawks in the opening round of bracket play at the NAIA National Championship Tournament Monday afternoon from the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

Marissa Gonzalez pitched all six innings for LCU and held the Lady Blue Hawks to just two hits while striking out seven batters.  The Lady Blue Hawks had only allowed three runs in the entire tournament, but they allowed four LCU runs in the third inning to open the game's scoring.  Hawkins hit a two-run double to left-centerfield to score Lisa Stratton and Honda Rodriguez, who were each aboard due to infield singles leading off the inning.

Kelly Griego scored Hawkins with her second home run of the tournament, blasting a pitch from Sara Jane Webster over the left field fence.  The Lady Chaps scored their next three runs via sacrifice flies.  Rodriguez scored Espinoza, who led off the fourth inning with a triple, with a sacrifice fly and Hawkins followed with another to score Stratton. Griego made it 7-0 in the fifth inning with her first sacrifice fly of the season. Her fly ball to right field scored Jessica Latson.  Hawkins closed out the scoring with another two-run double.

Hawkins is now 9-for-15 (.600) in the tournament with two homers and nine runs-batted-in.  Stratton also had a multi-hit contest with three singles in four plate appearances.

The Lady Chaps improve to 56-9 on the season and they remain in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament.  They will play the winner of the contest between St. Gregory's and Simon Frasier.  The contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today and it will air on KVOP 1090 AM and online on LCUchaps.com and TSRNsports.com.
