Current players and former teammates remembered St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile on Wednesday as a friend and brother at a memorial service at Busch Stadium. Dozens of players were at the ceremony attended by about 5,000 fans. The 33 year-old Kile died on Saturday in his hotel room in Chicago.
Colorado Rockies pitcher Pete Harnisch said Kile was a "teammate and a golf partner and a very special friend, a roommate, and finally, a brother. That was a natural progression for Darryl, teammate to brother." Among those who participated in the service were former Houston Astros pitcher Doug Drabek, Cardinals pitchers Dave Veres and Woody Williams.
Players from Arizona and Milwaukee, which is in town for a three game series, also took part. Many players took red-eye flights for the service and planned to catch return fights in time for their games on Wednesday night.
