Sausage King Donates $1 Million to Wayland Baptist University

Country performer and Texas sausage king Jimmy Dean donated one million dollars to Wayland Baptist University Tuesday. That's the biggest gift ever donated by an individual to the small school in Dean's hometown of Plainview.

Dean dropped out of high school in Plainview in 1946 to work and help his mother. His gift will help fund a scholarship in memory of his late mother.

Dean's now known primarily for his breakfast sausage, but he also performed with his band the Texas Wildcats and starred in "The Jimmy Dean Show" from 1963 to 1966.

Wayland Baptist has about 1,000 students and is located about 47 miles north of Lubbock.
