On Wednesday, Covenant Health System announced that all their facilities, including the outlying clinics, will implement a new tobacco-free policy anywhere on hospital grounds. That goes for physicians, employees, patients, and visitors, and most agree that it's important to set a good example for their patients.
"I agree with getting rid of the smoking areas because we're trying to promote patient wellness and health, and I don't understand how we can do that by having a smoking section -- so after they come in to have their arteries unplugged, they come outside to smoke," says Vanessa Ridenour.
Others, staff members say that while it's a good idea, it probably won't last. "I don't think it's going to work. There are too many people that smoke -- not only employees, but family members. They're under a lot of stress, and this is what they do to relieve stress," says Barbara Rogers.
The new policy will take affect July 1st.
