Vioxx Agrees to Settlement

The makers of Vioxx have agreed to pay millions for downplaying the painkiller's health risks in television ads.

The drug maker is not admitting to any wrongdoing, but it says it will pay $58 million as part of a multi-state settlement. The deal also calls on Merck to submit all future drug commercials to the FDA first, before they air on TV, so the government can decide if they can go on the air.

Vioxx was taken off the market in 2004 after research showed that the drug doubled the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
