Food for Thought Report 6.27

A few local bars make good this week, and if you're screaming for ice cream, then you're in luck. Let's cool off with another installment of Food for Thought.

We start off the top performing list at Crystal's Bar at 2403 Cornell. They receive zero critical violations. Our next stop is the Pit Stop Club at 707 North I-27, they are also a Top Performer. Now onto Crossties Saloon at 4820 Southeast Drive where inspectors also found zero critical violations, and Kaleidoscoops at 5718 4th Street scoops up a top performing certificate this week.

Our only Low Performer this time is Taste of China at 5605 Slide Road. That's where inspectors found 7 critical violations. Violations including:

  • Improper cooling of food. Rice was prepared the night before and was found at 60 degrees at the time of the inspection. Eggs were found at 57 degrees. Cold food should be kept at between 41 and 45 degrees or cooler.
  • Employees were not properly washing their hands between job duties.
  • Open drink containers were found on the food prep line and a hand washing sink was being used for other purposes than hand washing.
  • Improper hand washing and no use of protection, such as gloves or utensils was taking place before handling ready to eat foods.
  • There was cross contamination potential. Chicken and shrimp were being prepared at the same time by employees who had not washed their hands.
  • Food products were arranged improperly inside a cooler. Raw chicken was found over shrimp. There were no protective covers found on food products.
  • Dispensing units were stored in food containers and were not cleaned every 4 hours.

Other violations included heavy soil on the walls, the ceiling and the floor, improper thawing of food product, food products not properly stored--a chicken container was found on the floor--food products were not stored in cleanable containers--food was stored in open tin cans, the interior of a cooling unit was heavily soiled with ice build up--and the door to the freezer will not properly close.

The inspection report shows two of the critical violations were corrected on site. We called Taste of China but a manager was not there to tell us if more violations have since been corrected.
