Slaton Father Indicted in Connection with Toddler's Death

Posted:

The Slaton father who backed over his daughter in their driveway has been indicted on charges of intoxicated manslaughter.

Slaton Police say Juan Garcia, 24, was intoxicated when he backed over his daughter in their driveway in March 2008. Instead of calling for an ambulance, the family decided to drive to Lubbock to seek medical help.

Police say Shiann was sitting on her uncle's lap in the front passenger seat and her father was driving a Trans Am at a high rate of speed westbound on the Slaton Highway when a white passenger car pulled out in front of them. The Trans Am rolled several times, landing on its roof and eventually sliding into a ditch. Shiann was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead three hours later at Covenant Medical Center.

Initial autopsy results showed the toddler's death was likely caused from the initial accident in Slaton.
