World road champion Oscar Freire is the winner of the second stage of the Tour de France. The Spaniard overtook Germany's Erik Zabel in a late sprint.

Australia's Robbie McEwen finished second with Zabel third. Three time defending champ Lance Armstrong finished 61st, with the main pack just behind the winner.

Switzerland's Rubens Bertogliati retains the overall lead, with Zabel two seconds behind. Armstrong drops from third to fourth place overall.
