Local Author Dies

Lubbock has lost a long-time community activist and local author.

Katie Mae Parks passed away Tuesday at the age of 87. She was well-known for her years of community work in the city.

"She was just a great woman - a great black woman. She did a whole lot for the community; she was always out, even in her old age she was always out trying to help somebody get on their feet," said granddaughter Stephannie Brown.

Parks wrote a book called "Remember When" that was published by Southwest Collection at Texas Tech. She has a conference room named in her honor at the Larry Combest Wellness Center and she worked at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church for 50 years.

Parks is survived by two children, four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
