Floyd County authorities say a weekend shooting is their first homicide in 24-years. Now, they're hoping your tips can put the suspected killer behind bars.
Floydada Police say the suspect, 26-year-old Daniel Herrera, could be hiding out in Lubbock. Investigators consider him armed and dangerous. They say the shooting began with an argument, and escalated into a killing no one could have imagined.
Herrera is accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Israel Martinez of Floydada. Police tell us they were called a home in the 700 Block of West Grover at 2:24 a.m. Saturday.
Herrera is also accused of shooting 39-year-old Serapio Ovealle Junior in the buttocks. Floydada Police Chief Darrell Gooch tells NewsChannel 11 that Ovealle lived in the home.
Gooch says the victims got into a fight with Herrera earlier. He tells us the men threw beer cans and exchanged words. Herrera left, then returned with 9 millimeter automatic. Gooch says the suspect came around from the back of the home, taking the victims by surprise. He says they even asked if the suspect was shooting blanks before they were hit.
At least one bullet hit the home, shattering the siding. Once both victims were down, Gooch says Herrera kicked both men in the head then took off from the scene.
Investigators say Herrera could be hiding in Lubbock. He is considered armed and dangerous, so if you see him, or know how to locate him, call the Floydada Police Department at (806) 983-2834.
