Slaton Father Indicted for Intoxication Manslaughter
The Slaton father who backed over his daughter in their driveway was indicted Tuesday on a charge of intoxication manslaughter.
Slaton police say 24-year-old Juan Garcia was intoxicated when he backed over his daughter Shiann in March. Instead of calling for an ambulance, the family decided to drive to Lubbock to seek medical help.
Police say Shiann was sitting on her uncle's lap in the front passenger seat and her father was driving at a high rate of speed when a car pulled out in front of them in southeast Lubbock.
Garcia's car rolled several times, landing on its roof and eventually sliding into a ditch. Shiann was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead three hours later at Covenant Hospital.
Initial autopsy results showed the toddler's death was likely caused from the initial accident in Slaton.
