Fire Fighters Honored for Difficult Response

Sixteen Lubbock Fire Fighters were commended Thursday for their response to a deadly wreck in March 2008.

Brothers, Marvin and Terry Goree, died in an accident at the intersection of North Loop 289 and I-27. Police say a semi ran the stop sign at that intersection, hit the Goree's pickup, and crushed it against a concrete pillar. The brothers died instantly. And it took nearly an hour to rescue the two people inside the semi.

"The training that we do on our jaws equipment does prepare us," said Chris Angerer, the Deputy Chief of Operations for the Lubbock Fire Department. "But for what we had to see and had to deal with, no. There was not really any training that would be able to prepare you for that."

The driver of the semi, Eric Figueroa, 26, and his passenger has since recovered. A grand jury later indicted Figueroa for manslaughter. The case is still pending.

Fire stations number one, two, and truck number four all received unit citations for their efforts in the accident. A unit citation is awarded to fire department members who make up a team that has performed outstanding tasks under adverse conditions. For Your Cell Phone
