It is well known that certain body types are at greater risk for certain health problems. Now there is more evidence that not all pounds are the same, and that especially for women, where you carry your weight matters.
"An apple shaped woman who accumulates in the abdomen is at the higher risk for Breast Cancer that the pear-shaped woman who accumulates in the hips and thighs," says Dr. Brenda Coutinho, OB-GYN.
The study comes from the Alberta Cancer Board in Calgary, Canada. It says that the risk of Breast Cancer jumps by 30% in apple shaped women. So are you an apple or a pear? Or in the early stage of one or the other?
Doctors can be more precise, but you can test yourself at home. It is all based on the hip to waist ratio. Basically, if your waist is larger than your hips, you are at greater risk. This research was conducted by the Alberta Cancer Board in Calgary, Canada. The study was published in the May 20 issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
