Just as the Health Department checks up on restaurants to make sure the food is safe, the Joint Commission for Accreditation surprises health care facilities to be sure they are operating at the highest possible standards. It is a surprise visit that comes once every three years and from the score that came this week you could say the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center was rated a "Top Performer".
Dr. Steven Berk, M.D., TTUHSC College of Medicine Dean, says, "They'll go to Pediatric Clinic, to the Orthopedic Clinic, to any of our 12 or 16 clinics and make sure that patient satisfaction is good. They evaluate patient safety; they evaluate infection control they make sure that your employees are doing the right thing. That all your labs are functioning well."
Dr. Berk says that approval from the joint commission is an important guarantee that they are doing a good job.
