Jailers led 33-year-old Timothy Shawn Barbian into the Lubbock County Jail around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities arrested Barbian just after midnight at his parents' home in Plainview.
Barbian is charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault, after Lubbock investigators say he kidnapped to women and tried to rape them. Now, investigators suspect Barbian is behind a string of similar assaults dating back to 2006.
Police tell NewsChannel 11 more victims came forward this past weekend. Right now, they believe Barbian could be responsible for at least four attacks this month alone, and they're trying to determine if he's behind three similar attacks from the spring of 2006. "Mr. Barbian is the prime suspect in the recent kidnappings and rapes in Lubbock," Lubbock Police Lieutenant Jon Caspell said.
Last Friday, a concerned neighbor in Plainview called the Lubbock Crime Line. She suspected Barbian could be behind the recent attacks in the Hub City.
The caller told police that her neighbors, Barbian's parents, were out of town, and that Barbian was driving their white Chevrolet Tahoe. She says he had stun guns and other weapons and also told police Barbian had just recently been released from prison. That tip, plus field work by the Person Crimes Division of the Lubbock Police Department lead to Tuesday's arrest.
"Credit also needs to go to the Crime Line tipsters that have called in, and especially needs to go to the victims who've shown courage and come forward in these cases," Caspell said.
Now, investigators say the arrest could close the books on eight assault cases in Lubbock. "Detectives have so far identified four, possibly five victims in the past few weeks; they're still actively working these cases. Detectives are also actively working to link Mr. Barbian to the three rape cases in 2006. As a result we believe we currently have seven or eight cases against Mr. Barbian, and if more victims can be found or come forward, that number may obviously increase," Caspell said.
Since Lubbock Police suspect Barbian to be behind the 2006 assaults, we wanted to know why there was a two year time lapse. They told us they suspected Barbian was in prison during that time, so we checked it out.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice reports that Barbian went to prison in 2004 for two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle and a count of forgery out of Hale County. Then, in July of 2001 he was granted parole, but in February of 2003 he violated that parole, and went back to prison until October of 2005.
Barbian remained free until October of 2006. So that means he was out prison when the May 2006 assaults occurred. Five months after those attacks, he was back behind bars for possession of a firearm by a felon out of Lubbock County.
Just last month, Barbian was released again. Lubbock Police say the string most recent attacks started on July 3rd. Investigators are still working the case, but tell NewsChannel11 they suspect more charges will be filed.
