Illegal County Burn Fills Sky with Black Smoke

An illegal burn got out of hand in South Lubbock County Tuesday evening sending huge plumes of black smoke into the evening sky.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Department says the smoke came from tires and trash burning near 98th and Martin Luther King Boulevard just before 8:45pm.

The Woodrow Volunteer Fire Department quickly put out the flames, but reminds those in the county you are not allowed to burn tires, nor can you burn trash after 5pm.

"This is most definitely illegal. Anything that puts off black smoke: like limbs, wood, leaves, you can burn those, but please call the sheriff's office to get a control burn OKed," Assistant Woodrow Fire Chief Wesley Boone said.

The sheriff's department tells us the person responsible was cited for an illegal burn.
