The University of Florida is adding a new twist to cardio-power. When you use the gym, the energy you put into your exercise on the elliptical machine is recycled into electrical power.
It is the brainstorm of a University of Florida graduate. Hudson Harr has wired the machines at the Gainesville Health and Fitness Center to give patrons a tough workout and the environment a friendly boost.
Mandy Marlin, a gym member, says, "That's wonderful to be able do this while working out and doing something good for our bodies, to do something good for the environment, you can't beat that".
The power produced by the machines goes into a special grid and will help the gym offset its GRU costs. Harr hopes the concept will spread to other gyms, as people grow more conscious of lessening their carbon footprint by harnessing their foot power.
