Lubbock Sheriff's Department Requests Additional Funds for New Jail

Lubbock County residents may see taxes go up. The Sheriff's Department proposed its budget to the County Commissioners asking for more than $20 million to fund the jail. That's about $6 million more than last year.

Law enforcement says most of the proposed budget increase would pay for salaries. "This year was the year we actually saw the biggest impact with the new facility coming online early next spring," said Kelly Rowe, Chief Deputy. "The numbers we presented for all the staffing and operation costs will set just a little over $20 million to get this thing up in an operation."

The county plains to hire 117 new positions to staff the new jail, which is scheduled to open in April.
