An Advance in Nervous System Research

UCLA researchers have found that the nervous system can reorganize itself after a spinal cord injury. This is important news because it's long been thought the spinal cord can't adapt to change.

Damage to the spinal cord blocks routes used by the brain to send messages to nerve cells that control walking. Now, the scientists say, under certain conditions, the messages can take a "detour" around the injury just like when drivers use a detour around a closed road.

The scientists hope this research leads to new therapies for patients with paralysis from traumatic spinal cord injuries.
