A big honor for a volunteer group who calls the Lubbock State School home were honored.
The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services honored the Helping Hands Self-Advocacy Group with the Dignity Award.
The residents work to promote rights and independence of those who live at the Lubbock State School.
"It might be something like they weren't happy with the way that the food was served, and so they asked for things to be a little different that made it easier for them to get the food. They may not know how (to change it), but they would make a suggestion that somebody look at it to change it and make it better for them," Kathleen McCutchan with the Lubbock State School says.
The about 20-member group says they are very excited because this is the first time the school has received this award.
