Autopsy Reveals Newborn Alive at Time of Birth

New details in the death of a Lubbock newborn. Autopsy results reveal the hours-old, baby boy was alive at birth. The death remains under investigation, but no criminal charges had been filed as of Thursday night.

The medical examiner completed an autopsy on the baby Thursday morning. Wednesday afternoon, the 18-year-old mother went to the emergency room at Covenant Medical Center. She told workers there she had just given birth to a still-born baby, and left it in the backyard.

The ER crew alerted police. They arrived at the mother's home near 20th and Avenue L and found the baby dead.  Thursday, investigators revealed the baby was in the backyard, but was not buried as early reports suggested.

Authorities tell NewsChannel 11 this remains a suspicious death investigation, because they cannot prove any criminal act occurred. The preliminary autopsy results only show the child was alive at birth.

"What the preliminary results do not indicate is specifically what the cause of death was, how long the baby was alive after it was born, and some of the issues the baby may have faced, and what it's survivability was once it was born," Lubbock Police Captain Greg Stevens said.

NewsChannel 11 has also learned the mother's second child, a 3-year-old girl, has been removed from the home.  Child Protective Services says other children living in the same home were not removed. "We have found a safe placement for the 3-year-old daughter of the mother; we can't go into any detail about where that's at. The other children, we do not have cause to serve an emergency removal warrant or anything along those lines," Department of Child and Family Services Spokesman Greg Cunningham said.

Police did question the mother at the police department Thursday, but tell us she has not been arrested. They say full autopsy results could take several days or possibly weeks to complete.  NewsChannel 11 will keep folks updated as the story develops.

On Wednesday, a Lubbock teen told emergency room staff she delivered a still-born baby and left it in her back yard.  Now, police await autopsy results to determine if that story is true.
