Traditional and home style cooking and West Texas hospitality. How does that sound for a weekend getaway? You can find all those things less than an hour away in Crosbyton at the Smith House Bed and Breakfast.
Nestled on a suburban street in the middle of Crosbyton, the Smith House Bed and Breakfast is an anchor of the town's history. The house still envelops the antique and western flavor it had when it first opened as a boarding house in 1921. And if you check the guest registery, you will see the Smith House has always been open for business.
"You can look through there and find people from St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City. They were probably livestock buyers or something of that nature because the railroad came through here and it seemed like there was someone here everyday," said Terry Ellison of Smith House Bed and Breakfast.
Today, the guests who visit the Smith House come for different reasons. "Retreat groups, university and college stdents, buisness meetings, we have a large enough dining hall to accomondate the numbers they are looking for. We will have people that just want to get away, where there 30 to 40 minutes from Lubbock, and they like the idea of history and antique flavor."
Terry Ellison and his wife Karen have owned and operated the Smith House for the past three years, making sure they serve their guests a little history with their hospitlity. You will find artifacts of the past in each room of the house-from an antique stove to old paintings and even sounds of yesteryear.
"This is the parlor area that has the player piano that they bought in 1926." Guests can rest in the parlor or lounge in the den to watch some television or movies while taking in a taste of the outdoors. You will even find tradition and history when eating breakfast in the large dining hall.
"The plate rack on the wall is original. A number of the plates have been changed over the years, but a number of them are original."
You get your choice of theme rooms when staying overnight at the Smith House Bed and Breakfast. Walking upstairs is like taking a trip to the past. There you will find 10 of the 11 guest bedrooms, each decorated with its own theme.
"This room is a unique one. It has a private bath, but the clawfoot tub is out in the room and the original dress screen is in the corner."
"The cowboy room has a wagon wheel bed frame and there's Roy Rogers eating his Wheaties."
Some of the rooms share a hall bathroom with the other rooms. Individual bathrooms were put into the closets of rooms that were big enough for renvoations to be made.
You can have private seclusion with the honeymmon suite. Guests choosing this option can lounge in their own private den with a T.V. and sitting area and you can sleep in a massive bedroom. "It has a king sized bed, outside entrance, the old fireplace, a nice bath. And it has a clawfoot tub as well as a separate shower."
If you want to see a reflection of the past, this is the vacation getaway, you have been looking for. "It's the flavor of the rural community of this area. We're just a mile from the Caprock."
