Stripped screws are almost impossible to unscrew, and a product called the "Grabit" promises to get them out every time. But, does it work. NewsChannel 11's Cecelia Jones puts the "Grabit" to the test.
I would have never guessed to try the "Grabit" if it wasn't for the guy who sits next to me at work. NewsChannel 11's Ben Lawson hasn't been able to ride his bike in two years. His handle bars are loose, "It pops out, it is very wobbly," said Ben. He says he can't seem to tighten it. "Did you try removing that hex screw?," I asked. Ben replied, "Yeah, I tried to tighten it and basically there's no grip. It is all stripped out. It's a circle now."
Ben misses being able to ride in the great outdoors on his two wheels, minus the tie and slacks of course, and askes us to see if we can tighten his handlebars with the "Grabit".
It's a product that promises to remove damaged screws of any kind and broken bolts. The package is small and has four different sized extractors. For 20 bucks, Does It Work?
This is how it works: one side has a cutting head that drills a hole into the damaged area then you flip it and use the extractor to remove the screw. We're going to try it on this stripped phillips head screw first. We used three different sized cutting and extracting heads until we found the one that finally worked.
"Oh my goodness, that was it! We did it," we said. "Look how deep we drilled the hole in the head of the screw." Would it be this good on a broken bolt? The problem we ran into here was the hole was harder to drill. The power drill kept slipping, forcing us to drill the hole close to the side. That posed for a big problem when we used the bigger extractor.
"I think we ate out the hole part," Ben said. "We did, you ruined it," I replied. So we moved to the flat head screw where getting the screw out was effortless. But this is what Ben has been waiting to see. Would the "Grabit" remove the stripped hex screw?
Determined, this guy in the tie tried two different sized cutting heads and extractors and wouldn't you know it worked. "That's awesome!," Ben said. Ben was pleased, and I was pleased, so the "Grabit" works!
