Meadowbrook Golf Course in Mackenzie Park owes the City of Lubbock more than $90,000 in back rent payments.
In April 2006 the city entered into a contract with Evergreen Alliance Golf Limited, the company that manages Meadowbrook Golf Course. That contract requires the golf course make rental payments. According to Mayor Tom Martin, Meadowbrook has not paid the city $91,000 in back rent payments.
The contract allows Meadowbrook to use the rent money to make improvements to the golf course if they get the city's approval. They've had informal correspondence with the city regarding plans to use the amount owed to make improvements to the golf course. Mayor Martin said the city is working to get a formal proposal regarding those improvements. If the city does not grant the request, the golf course must pay the city all the money owed.
When NewsChannel 11 contacted Meadowbrook Golf Course, they said they could not make a comment because the issue is "sensitive and classified information."
The chief financial officer who was responsible for the city's books during the time Meadowbrook was missing payments was Jeff Yates. He resigned his position last week, but Martin said this incident is not related to his resignation.
Mayor Martin says he hopes to get the formal proposal from the golf course in the next month. Then, city officials will decide whether or not to grant the request to use the back rent payments for golf course improvements.
