Skin Cancer Smell

Posted:

We've told you on HealthWise about dogs that can be trained to sniff out bladder cancer.  There has been little known about other cancer smells, until now.  Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center say they have identified compounds that release odors linked to a common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.

Researchers studied the compound profiles of 11 patients with skin cancer and then compared those to the profiles of patients without the disease.  They found differences in the amount of compounds and odors released in the patients with skin cancer.  Now they are working on new technology to use those compounds to sniff out skin cancer it its earliest stage.
