When Texas Tech students roll into Lubbock in the next few weeks, many of them will be parking in style. The new state of the art parking garage opens Monday and it may relieve some of the usual back to school parking issues.
The garage has about 800 spaces, which will be split between faculty, students and visitors. The new garage cost $9.5-million to build. A parking garage permit will cost $250 as opposed to the $110 to park in the commuter lots. All of the spaces have sold and about 800 people are on a waiting list.
They chase tornadoes and hurricanes for a living and on Wednesday Texas Tech's Wind Engineers put their equipment on display. They showed off their smart radar truck, which measures storm data from inside the storm. They also launched a weather balloon that will go nearly 30,000 feet into the air to monitor weather conditions.
Some of those wind engineers may have benefited from the partnership Texas Tech announce on Wednesday with Estacado High School. It is a program that requires the high school students to apply what they have learned at Estacado to real world engineering problems provided by Texas Tech. Next year's project will be designing a playground for Northeast Lubbock. It is the first program like it in Texas.
