Texas Tech Earns $1 Million Grant

A million dollar grant will help put Texas Tech University on the forefront of wind energy production.

The Texas Workforce Commission presented Texas Tech with a $1 million check Friday. Tech will partner with Texas State Technical College West Texas in Sweetwater to form the Texas Wind Energy Institute.

Tech President Guy Bailey says this will help position Texas as the leader in education and development for the wind energy industry.

"We have the chance to corner the market on this industry here. You have a wonderful institution, we have the only Ph.D. program with wind energy in the country This grant will help us develop the work force that's needed to make wind energy a viable solution to our energy problem," said Bailey.

The Texas Wind Energy Institute is comprised of TTU and Texas State Technical College West Texas, in collaboration with the American Wind Energy Association, the Lone Star Wind Alliance, the Utility Wind Interest Group and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
