Two of the men who escaped from the Clovis, NM Detention Center are now in custody including one who was arrested right here in Lubbock.

Raynaldo Enriquez, 19, is behind bars at the Lubbock County Jail. US Marshals and the Lubbock Police Department captured the escapee in the 4300 block of 52nd Street less than 24 hours after he escaped.

Ronnie O'Neal with the US Marshals says Enriquez was arrested and taken to the Lubbock County Jail. Police in Muleshoe say he is known to have ties to gangs there and in Clovis. The 19-year-old faces burglary, robbery, and assault and battery charges out of New Mexico. And now all the escapees face additional charges including escape, conspiracy to commit escape and defacement of public property.

Here is how the day began. "On 8/24/08 at approximately 9:45p.m., it was discovered that eight inmates had escaped from the Curry County Adult Detention Facility," said Curry County Sheriff Matt Murray.

Seven of those inmates were:

  • Victor Sotelo, 26
  • Larry McClendon, 19
  • Javier Zapata, 19
  • Raynaldo Enriquez, 19
  • Michael England, 29
  • Edward Salas, 21
  • Louis Chavez, 21

According to authorities, it was around 9:45 p.m. Sunday night at the Curry County Detention Center when the inmates escaped out of a hole in the roof, shimmied down a tree and took off. "After a short foot pursuit, one inmate, Victor Apadaka was located and captured," said Sheriff Murray.

Three jumpsuits were found on the roof and three more jumpsuits were found in some dumpsters behind a McDonalds just up the street from the detention center.

Because of this escape, Curry County Manager Lance Pyle ordered the facility to take several steps to assure no more escapees would follow. "All inmates were locked down and all pods were searched about 10 p.m. last night (Sunday). Several headcounts were performed last night and additional headcounts will continue," said Pyle.

Authorities urge you, if you see any of these men do not approach them, call 911.
