You've heard of Epsom salts, a tried and true home remedy for all sorts of aches and ailments. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that an I.V. solution of salts may have a dramatic effect, reducing the risk of cerebral palsy (a serious form of brain damage that affects movement and speech and is more common in premature infants).
Dr. John Thorpe is on the research team that has been studying this at the University of North Carolina. He says the side effects in women were minor and included flushing and drowsiness. At this point, they are excited but still unsure how this works in cutting the risk of CP in newborns.
