Posted: Updated:

Two 18-year-olds are hospitalized following an early morning accident in East Lubbock.

Desaree Brittany Melina was heading eastbound in the 500 block of East 50th Street around 4:30 Tuesday morning, when she lost control of her car, hit a tree, and then a utility pole.

Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free Melina from the car. She and her passenger, Michael Carranco, were both transported to UMC with serious injuries.

As of Tuesday evening, Melina is listed in critical condition and Carranco is in satisfactory condition. Both teens were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
