There is an exciting announcement from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Three pediatric oncologists and a team of 17-scientists from the University of Southern California have come here to set up shop and find some answers to cancer.
The focus of this new academic cancer center will be to create new cancer fighting drugs that will help adults with cancer as well as children.
"This is a great step forward in our research program and great step forward in our cancer community. The group is led by Dr. Patrick Reynolds who is nationally known for his work in cancer research. He'll be developing new drugs in our labs, testing the new drugs against cancer cell lines. Then, eventually having clinical trials in West Texas to see how well these drugs work," said Steven Berk, M.D., Dean of the TTUHSC School of Medicine.
It's estimated that 4,000 people in West Texas will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Dr. Berk says this new cancer research center will allow patients to receive specialized treatment here rather than going to Dallas or Houston for something new in cancer care.
