Aggies Say They're Sorry

8/16/02

Dr. David J. Schmidly, President of Texas Tech University

Dear Dave:

Further to our telephone conversation this morning, I want to express my personal regret over the inclusion of disparaging remarks about Texas Tech University and Lubbock in Texas A&M's football media guide. It was a lamentable mistake, for which a public apology already has been made. I have directed that the guide be recalled and the offensive comments removed before it is reissued.

While I am new in this position, it is obvious that our two universities, and all Texas public universities, have a wide array of issues and challenges that will require our cooperation and collaboration. I look forward to meeting with you, perhaps initially in Lubbock, to discuss opportunities for working together.

With the opportunities and challenges we face, it is important to contain whatever rivalry exists to athletic competition in the best tradition of good sportsmanship and the highest standards of mutual respect and courtesy. I assure you that certainly will be my message here.

Sincerely,
Robert M. Gates, President of Texas A&M University
