Autism Study Canceled

A study of an alternative treatment for autism has been cancelled.

Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health were set to start a study on chelation therapy - something that has been used to treat heavy metal poisoning for autism spectrum disorders. Since some believe that autism may be triggered by mercury in vaccines, it was thought that chelation therapy could clear the body of any mercury and reduce the symptoms.

However, the NIH review board has determined that because most childhood vaccines have been mercury free since 2001 and because there is no clear benefit, the study has been cancelled.
