Criteria Released for When to Use Amber Alert

Two days after Dallas authorities raised concerns about overuse of the Amber Alert System, a list of criteria has been released to clarify when it is needed. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says three points warrant an Amber Alert.

  • Law enforcement confirms a child has been abducted
  • Police believe the abducted child will be hurt or killed
  • There is a good enough description about the child, the suspect, and or the suspect's vehicle to believe an immediate broadcast alert will help
