Good News for Stroke Sufferers

The clot-busting drug "TPA" is the gold standard treatment for stroke patients but it has to be administered within three hours of the first sign of a stroke.

Now, there is good news in the New England Journal of Medicine, that three hour window may be opened up a little to reverse the damage of a stroke as much as 4 ½ hours after those first symptoms. Researchers came to that conclusion after comparing over 400 patients who received the drug to another 400 who did not.

While this may mean more patients can benefit from the drug, experts are quick to say that this study does not suggest delaying treatment, because every minute counts when you're looking at the possibility of stroke damage.
