Friday afternoon, Lubbock County Commissioners approved a more than $60-million budget. The commissioners raised taxes as much as they legally could without holding an election.
Members say the increase is mostly to fund the new jail, but some county employees are getting raises as well. We asked commissioners about this, and they say department heads cut their budgets to give non-elected employees a raise.
Commissioner Patty Jones also tells NewsChannel 11 it's easier and more cost efficient to keep current employees than to re-train new employees.
