Local Kennel Club Hosts AKC Dog Show & Obedience Trials

Dog lovers from all across the country are at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center this weekend for the Heart of the Plains Kennel Club Obedience and Rally Trials.

"Ike is a Maltese, and he just started his show career. He's a puppy and he just won best of breed," said competitor Tonia Holibaugh.

More than 800 dogs and their owners are taking part in the competition, and organizers say the event brings some big names to Lubbock.

"Some of the professional handlers that you see out here, you've seen them on Westminster Kennel Club, Ukanuba, so a very good competition. I know many of our local dogs here are ranked nationally too," said Sherell Guichard-Thomas, Chairman.

The competition continues Sunday at the Civic Center and admission is free.
