It is hard to know what to do when you want to help someone who is facing a terminal cancer. According to a new report from the National Institutes of Health, massage therapy may be the perfect gift to significantly reduce pain and provide an emotional boost.
Director of the study, Dr. Jean Kutner of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, says that it's, "Probably a combination of direct effect on muscle cells as well as inflammatory markers and endorphins and other things that make us feel better." David Mejia, a cancer patient, adds, "I continuously have neck and shoulder pain and massage has been one of those things I can count on to take away the physical pain".
The study followed 400 terminal cancer patients at 15 hospice centers.
