Genetic tests can identify more than 1,500 genes linked to your health and some of the tests you can do yourself, without ever going to a lab or a doctor.
The test can be pricey, one test costs $985 dollars, but you can use it to check for 29 diseases including type-2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and breast and prostate cancer. The question that some are asking you to think about before you buy is," Then what?" Genetics Counselor, Caroline Leiber, says, "The fact that those results are perhaps going to say, your risk for heart disease has moved from 5%, and I'm making up the numbers here, to 8%, how helpful is that information going to be for you in terms of changing your lifestyle".
Leiber says that there is a huge emotional burden that can come with home genetic testing. Proponents say that genetic testing can give you more control over your life but only if you take those test results to a doctor and find out what choices you have, instead of keeping the results to yourself.
