Look for new labels on cold and cough medicine for kids. The nation's pediatricians blasted the drug manufacturers, and now they agree that children under the age of four should not use over-the-counter cold medicine.
The labels will be changed accordingly. Officials with the Consumer Healthcare Products Association say this will be a voluntary change not because the drugs are not safe, but because manufacturers realize people do not follow directions and youngsters are getting unsafe doses.
The new label changes should be phased in during the end of 2008 to the beginning of 2009. In the meantime, researchers do not see a reason to pull current medication off the shelf.
