After being closed to through traffic for four months, both the east- and westbound North Loop 289 main lanes have been re-opened to traffic.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) closed North Loop, from I-27 to Ash Avenue, after the Memorial Day holiday and detoured all traffic onto the frontage roads as part of a $2.7 million project to rehabilitate the bridge at Ash Avenue and to perform structure repair and paint the bridges at I-27.
"The Ash Avenue bridge is poured and we now have traffic running underneath it on North Loop," said Bryan Wilson, P.E., TxDOT's Lubbock Area engineer. "This should alleviate a lot of the congestion at North Loop and the I-27 interchange."
Motorists can still expect single lane closures periodically on North Loop while crews complete other work, such as railing and sidewalks, on the bridge. Work on the project is scheduled for completion in February 2009.
