Before you groan, the news isn't all that bad. Ironically, Burger King gets a gold star for adding some healthier items to its menu, but it's also at the bottom of the list for its old fashioned ice cream shake. The CSPI says that large treat has 42 grams of fat, more than a double whopper with cheese and 1,200 calories. But BK's Chicken Whopper junior and veggie burger made the best fast food list. So did Wendy's Mandarin Chicken salad, Subway's low fat subs, and McDonald's fruit and yogurt parfait. All good choices when you're in a hurry.
"There are better alternatives than choosing burgers or fries. That's the main thing getting away from the fried foods," says Deanna Mandrell, a registered dietician.
Deanna reminds us that the healthiest way to order at a fast food restaurant is to think small. If you can resist the temptation to get more for your dollar and order the super-size or the big meal deal, you will save a lot on fat and calories just by ordering the junior size.
