Lubbock Construction Worker Killed In Accident

A construction worker is dead, following an accident along the Marsha Sharp Freeway Thursday afternoon.

Investigators tell NewsChannel 11 that crews were using a backhoe to move concrete forms along the freeway near 34th and Bangor, when one of the blocks fell into a culvert onto the worker. Construction crews immediately called 911, but they could not save the victim, 36-year-old Larry Franco of Lubbock.

Lubbock Police tell us that EMS crews pronounced him dead just after 1 p.m.  "Unfortunately the victim was not able to get out from underneath it, and whether the individual died from suffocation or the impact itself has yet to be determined. Now, as far as how the equipment failed, that will have to come after the investigation," Lubbock Police Captain Greg Stevens said.

OSHA and Granite Construction have now taken over the investigation. Preliminary indications are that hydraulics on the backhoe may have given out.

NewsChannel 11 has put in calls to both TxDOT and Granite.  TxDot directed our questions to Granite and they have not yet returned our call.  We will have the latest on this story tonight on NewsChannel 11 at 10.
