This is an alarming wakeup call; the American Liver Foundation estimates that at least 5% of American children over the age of five have fatty liver disease, which could lead to a liver transplant later in life.
Gastroenterologist Dr. Natalie Murray says, "It's a huge operation. Then it's followed by a lifetime of medications."
Diet and exercise are the first line of defense against obesity and an increased risk of liver disease. Even so, the Liver Foundation predicts that fatty liver disease will be the number one reason for liver transplants by the year 2020.
