Health Risks for "Occasional" Smokers

If you occasionally smoke, you might still be putting yourself at risk.

Researchers at the University of Georgia measured blood flow in the arteries of non-smokers, and those who smoked occasionally (less than a pack a week). They found occasional smokers were nearly 40 percent less responsive to changes in blood flow, which is an early indicator of artery damage.

Since the people they tested had not even smoked for at least two days, the researchers say that shows the damaging effects of every cigarette can last for days after the smoke clears.
