A student who won a contest by making on a 30-yard field goal will start out kicking extra points for No. 8 Texas Tech tomorrow at No. 19 Kansas.
Sophomore transfer Matt Williams hit the contest field goal during a game last month. Now, he'll start out kicking extra points but step aside for field goals and kickoffs. Those will be handled by freshman Donnie Carona.
Mike Leach made the move because Carona and senior Cory Fowler have missed six extra points and half of their eight field-goal attempts.
Williams walked on Division II Tarleton State but didn't kick in any in games before transferring to Tech (7-0, 3-0). He joined the Red Raiders on September 22nd, two days after making the 30-yarder between the third and fourth quarters of the game with Massachusetts. He won a month of free rent for nailing the field goal.
The NCAA granted a one-time exception to its rule requiring players who transfer to Division I to sit out a year. The exception was granted because Williams wasn't recruited by Tarleton State or on scholarship there.
