Halloween Shoppers Aren't Spooked Away From Spending

This year's economy isn't spooking anyone away from having a good time this Halloween.  Sales are expected to be up nationwide and the same holds true here in Lubbock.  People of all ages are getting ready to dress up for Halloween this year, and they aren't letting the weak economy scare them away.

"People still want to go out and have a good time and enjoy themselves and a Halloween event is one of the best times to do that," said owner of Spirit Halloween Superstore Grant Gassaway.

According to the National Retail Federation Halloween spending is expected to reach $5.7 billion this year, up over last year.  At Spirit Halloween Superstore on 50th street they are noticing the increase.  "We have noticed a higher trend this year even thought the economy is having its woes Halloween sales have been up, up, up, and we're just looking forward to that continuing until November 2nd," said Gassaway.

Everyone is looking for that perfect costume.  Hannah Montana and High School Musical are two of the top costumes for 2008.   A lot of the popular costumes this year come from whatever movie is popular that year, like this year its Batman and the Joker, but the most popular costume this year is Ironman.

And even the November election is weighing in on this year's most popular costumes. Political masks are flying off the shelves.   "We've seen a nice head to head matchup, Obama is still in the lead, but McCain is still not far behind," said Gassaway.
